Deer Fly - Chrysops niger - Female
Mill Pond Park, Richmond Hill, York Region, Ontario, Canada
June 14, 2008
Size: 7.5 mm
Landed on clothing. Looks like C. calvus - would like confirmation before moving to species page, since it could also be niger.

Thanks Tony
I wasn't completely sure of calvus, knowing that niger could be around too. And, I couldn't really tell "how absent" the yellow stripe is in the existing niger images. I'll know from now on.

Besides
the colour of the stripe, calvus has the top of vertex shiny; in niger there is a pruinose stripe across the top (back) of the vertex which I think I see in your photo.
I am preparing a key to the eastern tabanids for CJAI. Am going to need images of live specimens (face, dorsal, lateral) of the species that I can't get locally - several from Ontario. Teskey's 1990 paper lists all the species from every province.

I know a friend of mine
... is currently assisting Stephen Marshall to edit and add distribution maps to your printed eastern Tabanids key.
I found I've taken on an interest in Tabanids, and will be on the lookout for more Chrysops this summer. So, hopefully will be posting more of these flies. Don't have a copy of Teskey 1990, though.

It is
niger
