unknown fly on small burr-like seed - Hemipenthes celeris

unknown fly on small burr-like seed - Hemipenthes celeris
Austin, Travis County, Texas, USA
June 19, 2008
Size: 1/2 inch approx
Slight iridescence on body and wings, the dried seed is probably hedge parsely. The fly appeared to be sucking something, but I couldn't detect any kind of captured small insect; perhaps there was some moisture on the seed.

ID
This is a Bombyliid in the Villini (Anthracinae) about which there is some dispute about generic assignment. I think Villini is best for now. It ranges from AZ to TX and far S into Mexico and probably beyond. Regarding the sucking, it could have been eating pollen. I have seen this in several bee flies and will soon be posting some shots of the phenomenon. An interesting note (as Vin Scully says): this fly shows beautiful gold accents in life which fade to dull white in pinned specimens.
