globular springtail – Dicyrtomina minuta? - Dicyrtomina minuta

globular springtail – Dicyrtomina minuta? - Dicyrtomina minuta
Rock Creek Stream Valley Park, Rockville, Montgomery County, Maryland, USA
December 11, 2020
Size: 2 mm?
Happy to finally get some decent shots of a globular springtail! Most of the shots I see of this species seem to be from the winter months, so I presume that is their time of year. I'm guessing this is forma saundersi, but not really sure how to distinguish from other forms.

This was on the metal railing of a bridge over stagnant water on the border between deciduous forest and a meadow. I frequently find springtails on this railing; not sure why. Temperature circa 55°F.

Dicyrtomina minuta forma couloni
Indeed Dicyrtomina are winter active species.
To distinguish the forms :
saundersi : has a butt patch in the shape of a Xmas tree (to stay in the season ;-) )
ornata : in the dorsal "spaceman" figure, the head is connected to the body
couloni : in the dorsal "spaceman" figure, the head is not connected to the body, as in your specimen
