Red Velvet Ant on Slate Mountain Northwest of Flagstaff - Dasymutilla - female

Red Velvet Ant on Slate Mountain Northwest of Flagstaff - Dasymutilla - Female
Flagstaff, Coconino County, Arizona, USA
September 4, 2011
This beautiful creature was crawling next to the trail I was hiking up Slate Mountain, northwest of Flagstaff. It appears to be a "Velvet Ant", a wasp in the family Mutilladae, maybe genus Dasymutilla, but that's as far as I can go.
