Eurypogon species - Eurypogon californicus - female

Eurypogon species - Eurypogon californicus - Female
Taos ski valley, Taos County, New Mexico, USA
July 2, 2005
Size: 4.4 mm
This is an eastern Eurypogon, but I have found it several times in NM. I checked the original lit for ID. Check antennal segs 2,3,4. Eurypogon can be distinguished from Macropogon by only 2,3 being small.
E. niger can be told from E. harrisi because 2+3 almost equals 4 in niger.
*** well the above sentence is not true. It comes from D&A but is no longer valid.

changed ID
I originally used Downie and Arnett to ID this specimen.
After working with my colleague Kevin Hinson, reviewing the literature on Eurypogon, it is apparent that these specimens are actually E. harrisii. The key in D&A is misleading. We checked this with Dan Young.
Several other identifications of Eurypogon in this guide may need to be moved. We are writing up a paper on this. I thought to leave these pics at the Eurypogon level for now.

Rick and I got this sorted ou
Rick and I got this sorted out...This is E. californicus based on body length, light colored hair over entire dorsum, shape of pronotum, and western distribution. Refer to the following: Hinson,K.R. and R.J. Buss. 2015. New state records and identification of North American Eurypogon Motschulsky (Coleoptera: Artematopodidae), with a lectotype designation for Eurypogon niger (Melsheimer). The Coleopterists Bulletin 69(4): 768-772.
