Euxoa misturata? - Euxoa misturata - male

Euxoa misturata? - Euxoa misturata - Male
Cathedral Gorge State Park, Lincoln County, Nevada, USA
September 19, 2020
Size: ~18.5 mm TL
Found at the campground. Found two of these that evening. This moth matches size, description, images, flight time and location for Euxoa misturata. Key characteristics of that species are white underwings, smallish orbicular spot with ocellus, and dark shading across entire terminal area. According to description and images at Pacific Northwest Moths, this species can vary significantly in forewing color and presence of transverse lines. Using comparisons of similar species at Pacific Northwest Moths, I was able to rule out the species listed there. Euxoa latro can also appear similar to this moth, however that species does not have white hindwings. Here is a link to the other moth found that evening that appears to be the same species:

MONA Fascicle 27-2
After review of MONA Fascicle 27-2, I am even more convinced that this is indeed Euxoa misturata. Compares well with Image 17, Plate 8 of the fascicle.

OK
I'm assuming that this belongs in:
» Noctuini » Agrotina » Euxoa » Subgenus Euxoa (Euxoa Subgenus Euxoa) » misturata group (Euxoa misturata group)

Please let me know if that isn't correct and hang on while I work it.

Looks right to me
That appears to be the layout in Fascicle 27-2. Thx Bob!

Vargo agrees
Jim Vargo has looked at these and agrees with misturata as the ID. Whenever a page is created for this species it might be good to mention that this species is highly variable in appearance and include a link to MONA Fascicle 27-2.
