Fly? on my pet bird

Fly? on my pet bird
Wharton, Wharton County, Texas, USA
June 20, 2008
Size: 1/4"
Can anyone identify this for me? I was petting my pet Dove today when this "fly" flew out from underneath its wing. It landed on my arm and I instictively swatted at it. Although I left a red mark and welt on my arm, it didn't kill this thing. It flew onto the sliding door glass and I captured it in a plastic storage bag.

These are fortunately somewhat rare in our area (though no doubt much more common than anyone realizes), and unfortunately even more rarely photographed.

If it's any consolation, this is quite a find.

Re: Louse Fly
Ugh! The name gives me chills. Off to research them. Thank you both for the ID.
