Eupeodes volucris ... female
Eupeodes volucris ... female.
Scaeva pyrastri is now considered to be Palearctic and the old name Scaeva affinis has been resurrected for Nearctic specimens previously identified as pyrastri.
However, this is Eupeodes volucris. Scaeva affinis has the frons inflated and the shining coal black area on the frons is restricted to the ocellar triangle area and not reaching half way to the antennae as here. Also, the frons is not inflated here. S. affinis has the inner tips of markings on tergites wider than the narrowest central part but markings of a more uniform thickness here. Sides of tergite 5 white (sometimes difficult to see) but black in Scaeva affinis. Scutellum very often with yellow or white rim and somewhat semicircular black mark directly above black antennae in volucris. The sharp bend of the M1 vein forming the upper outer cross-vein is well separated from the point where the lower outer cross-vein meets the M1 vein but much closer in Scaeva affinis. Scaeva affinis has the R4+5 vein more curved than here. Eyes are bare here but with hairs (sometimes difficult to see) in affinis.
