This one is black. - Sandalus californicus - Male
Colfax, Placer County, California, USA
August 17, 2020
Size: 14.5 mm
UV 20 watt bucket trap collection 9 mi. south of Colfax, on Pine Lake Dr., 666 m elevation (2,185 ft), 39.0651, -120.9440

I couldn't find this character information anyplace else, but according to Evans (1) there are two species of Sandalus in CA with the following differences.
1. S. cibricollis = very coarse pits on the head and prothroax.
2. S. californicus = densely and finely pitted head and prothorax = this specimen.
Both species range from dark reddish brown to Black. I thought a black example would be nice to show for CA since the others are reddish brown.

An important character for the family is the presence of the membranous lobes on the tarsomeres 1-4 which I thought interesting to picture Arnett (2).
