Silver lake, Amador County, California, USA

Size: 1/2"
I had to swat this guy ... gently ... out of the air to see what it was . It looks like a beetle . There were a few flying around down low in the pine forest . At first I thought it was a moth , but it looks like a beetle . It is a really pretty color red , but what kind is it ? Thanks for any help , sincerely Beth

Dictyoptera simplicipes
Dictyoptera simplicipes is the only species that occurs in California. It's a beautiful beetle -- great find! Moved to new species page.

I have a couple of photos of one here that I haven't had time to put in Bugguide.

I'm not an expert
but check out Dictyopterus while you wait for a positive ID. None here from CA yet (see data map), if I'm right.
