Aphididae - Microparsus variabilis

Aphididae - Microparsus variabilis
Plymouth Rock, Winneshiek County, Iowa, USA
July 27, 2020
(accidentally) on Starry campion, Silene stellata, in a Campion Coronet, Hadena ectypa, rearing jar.
Thanks Natalie: the collection location of the Starry campion has lots of Desmodium canadense.

Moved
Moved from Aphids.

The species colonizes Desmodium and Amphicarpaea monoica, Silene isn't even in the right family, but it looks like Microparsus, matches the characters for M. variabilis, and doesn't really match anything known to colonize Silene. Perhaps it was next to a usual host plant and when the plants were collected for the rearing jar they had no where else to go?

Thanks Natalie,
I'm always suspicious when I find just one or two aphids on some plant, especially in a rearing jar. I have plenty of Desmodium around.

Thank you for clarifying. And glad I saved them, new aphid for me.

Yay!
Not a genus that gets collected often, I like the colors though.
