Canadian Owlet, dorsal - Calyptra canadensis

Canadian Owlet, dorsal - Calyptra canadensis
Plymouth Rock, Winneshiek County, Iowa, USA
June 13, 2020
I've not seen this larva since 2005.

The longer story: working in the Iowa DNR prairie production plots, 2004-2005, I was delighted to find host specific larvae on their host plants, rows of plants in a landscape of corn and soybeans. Perhaps planting more native plants, planting prairies, could be more than pretty flowers and renewing the soil, they could also be beneficial to insects. Since then I've been trying to document host specific larvae in nearby prairie plantings including CRP.
