Thanks for the additional shots. I can't see the colour of the hair on the coxae (which would be the clincher), but the face is dark and the wing pattern still looks right. I'm confident enough to move it to species level. The other images are of a different specimen though; this is a female, and the others are of a male.

Bee Fly
Thanks for the ID. There are quite a few bee flies around the garden this year, many more than I would normally see. The pictures were taken 1 minute apart according to the time data on the photos. The pair of them must have been in the same area when I took the photos. Glad to have gotten photos of both sexes.

This is Bombylius; it may be B. fulvibasoides, but I can't be confident without seeing additional angles.
