Noctuidae, larva, ventral

Noctuidae, larva, ventral
100 Acre Wood, Winneshiek County, Iowa, USA
July 4, 2020
Confused and/or perplexed
July 3, 2020: found this larva, thought it was The Wedgling, Galgula partita, read that they feed on Oxalis but couldn't find any. White clover, Trifolium repens, reminds me of Oxalis so gave it some. There was frass and the larva seemed larger. Found Yellow Wood sorrel, Oxalis sp., gave it some.
July 8, 2020: definitely on flowers of White clover even when Oxalis is available
July 10, 2020: it is not The Wedgling rather looks like the Variegated Midget. BG says: "The larva feed on balsam fir, hemlock, pine, spruce, yellow birch and white cedar". Wagner says: "overwinters as a pupa".
July 12, 2020: finally determined that it had spun a cocoon in the spent White clover flowers.
I doubt its still alive (based on experience) but its overwintering in the fridge.
April 24, 2021: finally opened to find what looked like a dead 1/2 larva, 1/2 pupa
