Grapevine Looper - Eulithis

Grapevine Looper - Eulithis
Parkwood, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
June 6, 2005
Size: 25 mm
Found at my porch light. The wingspan measurement was 25 mm in the natural position, not spread, so it would probably be somewhat larger in a specimen.

I see the quandry over species identification, I'll just add some links to two more images from Maryland Moths: Eulithis diversilineata, Eulithis gracilineata. I don't know if there was anatomic verification of those identifications.

At any rate, the resting posture of this moth is just wild!

Nice One, P. Coin
We have 'em down here, too. I was blown away by the posture as well. It's nice to know what kind of moth that is, finally. Thanks.

Killer pics, BTW. I'll try to snap a couple and we'll see if they are marked differently at all.

Also - are there other moths that use this position while at rest? Or is it individual to this species?

Moth postures, etc.
I've never seen one curve its abdomen all the way up over its head like this, but the abdomen curved-up posture is found in a variety of moths. It changes the profile, I imagine, making it more difficult for birds to spot.

Thanks for sharing your web site.

The Site
I noticed that other moths sit like that after browsing some recent uploads today. I guess that adds one more inscription of the word "newbie" to my forehead. I am running out of space there.

The link to my weblog is in my signature. ;) The more the merrier. So I should say Thank YOU for visiting!

Feel free to leave comments there, Patrick, should you decide to return.

I'll amend my signature, by the way, so it is more obviously a signature. I don't want to confuse people.
