tan mayfly with big white eyes - Maccaffertium mediopunctatum - male

tan mayfly with big white eyes - Maccaffertium mediopunctatum - Male
Cardinal Marsh, Winneshiek County, Iowa, USA
May 29, 2020
Size: ~15 mm
I hope I didn't narrow this mayfly down too far down in the mayfly Order but I didn't see anything but flatheaded mayflies from Iowa with these big "white" eyes and distinctive stripe through the middle. I've got a mayfly with eyes like this that was identified to the Genus Maccaffertium but it had different body colors. If I remember right, these eyes can be black depending on the lighting.

I'm not sure...
...whether or not Roger looks at placements this deep. We generally move all mayflies to Ephemeroptera where we know he'll see them.

Flatheaded mayfly
Thanks for the information, Ken. I'll move it to Ephemeroptera.

Maccaffertium mediopunctatum mediopunctatum
Hi Larry-

Thanks. I believe this male subimago to be of genus Maccaffertium , probably (but not necessarily) Maccaffertium mediopunctatum mediopunctatum.

Maccaffertium mediopunctatum
Thanks so much for identifying this male mayfly as being Maccaffertium mediopunctatum, Roger! I see that Winneshiek County is a hotbed for this mayfly in Iowa! With your help I'm starting to build a nice little photo library of the mayflies we have in my area. I'm also a fly fisher so I've always been fascinated by mayflies and their relationship with the trout in our coldwater streams.
