Shore-line predator mites - Neomolgus littoralis

Shore-line predator mites - Neomolgus littoralis
Oyster River, University of New Hampshire, Durham, New Hampshire, USA
June 1, 2008
Size: 1-2mm?
Size is a rough estimate from memory (as if there was any other kind of estimation.)
Found racing over the rocks lining the high-tide line of the shores along the Oyster River. These two were stopped to feed on something.

Incredible image! Did you use
Incredible image! Did you use a flash? You got great depth of field for a macro.

11 years late
Oh, geez. I'm sorry I'm only now noticing this. Yeah, I do use a flash, although that can lead to bleaching of the subjects or obscuring of detail if they have highly reflective body surfaces. With this, though, I think I just got lucky with the old silver Nikon camera I had at the time (this was back during my undergraduate at UNH.) It didn't have a dedicated macro lens (it was just a pocket camera, really) but it did have a macro function programmed in. I don't know how it managed such a clear shot. I remember taking this photograph, it was very bright out that day, and was basically perfect for photography. I really think I just got lucky.

Bdellidae: Neomulgus littoralis
N. littoralis is a common bdellid seen running around on seashores. It has one of the largest body sizes of the family. Awesome picture!

Thank you!
Well this is all good to hear. :)

The quality of the image was simply shear beginner's luck. The two had stopped to feed while all the others were running around like they were on speed.
