looks to me like Epeolus, but then I found photos of Nomada species that resemble this more - especially the yellow patches on the scutellum

ID sources
Thank you so much for the ID!
May I take another minute of your time and ask which is the best book or site to use to ID bees for a beginning amateur? I have Mitchener's 'Bees of the world' but its beyond my abilities.
I learned more from 'Wilson and Carril: The bees in your back yard' but would like to try a few ID's down to species, which this book does not offer.
Thanks again, and best regards,
Thomas

Yes
You can out find lots of important ID information by running through the keys on
Dicoverlife.org
. Start
here
for general Bee identifications.
Sometimes the best reference is listed on the
Books
tab. In this case:
(

)
Otherwise, try to find the latest key to species for that particular family or genera. However, all of the key information may not be visible in the images.
If you don't know the specific family, it's best to wait for an expert like Dr. Ascher or Dr. Buck. Please note that they may not subscribe to every image that they move. So, you might have better luck contacting them directly through an email.
