Size: 2.5mm
Host plant looked like wild lettuce
(Lactuca canadensis)
but not positive. Plant has not flowered yet.

. ID based on host plant, using a reference with a key to species of this genus in Michigan--i.e., the ID is not 100% positive but is highly likely.

Sow-thistle?
The flattened and grooved surface of this stem (assuming that's what it is) suggests it is a species of sow-thistle (
Sonchus
). See
this stem
as an example.

Similar...
but I only see the spiny variety in VA. There were no spines on the leaves and the plant resembles
Sonchus asper
without the spines, of course.

Food plant
I have been trying to take some shots of the plant itself. Many times I forget; but it is important to remember that, with many plant feeding insects, the host plant is important for an ID. And it is nice to know that there is a botanist among us who can give us a hand.

Funny thing happened..
as I remember. I went back to get an image of the plant and it was gone! I couldn't find a trace of it. This year, more of them appeared and I didn't see any aphids on them.

Back to lettuce
Thanks for that information! No spines takes it out of
Sonchus
. Moreover, upon further perusal of manuals, the "groove" I mentioned earlier appears too wide to match up with other
Sonchus
stems. Let's leave this one as
Lactuca canadensis
after all.
