Moved
Moved from Uroleucon. ID based on host plant, using a reference with a key to species of this genus in Michigan--i.e., the ID is not 100% positive but is highly likely.

Sow-thistle?
The flattened and grooved surface of this stem (assuming that's what it is) suggests it is a species of sow-thistle (Sonchus). See this stem as an example.

Similar...
but I only see the spiny variety in VA. There were no spines on the leaves and the plant resembles Sonchus asper without the spines, of course.

Food plant
I have been trying to take some shots of the plant itself. Many times I forget; but it is important to remember that, with many plant feeding insects, the host plant is important for an ID. And it is nice to know that there is a botanist among us who can give us a hand.

Funny thing happened..
as I remember. I went back to get an image of the plant and it was gone! I couldn't find a trace of it. This year, more of them appeared and I didn't see any aphids on them.

Back to lettuce
Thanks for that information! No spines takes it out of Sonchus. Moreover, upon further perusal of manuals, the "groove" I mentioned earlier appears too wide to match up with other Sonchus stems. Let's leave this one as Lactuca canadensis after all.

Moved from Aphids.

Nice image
We have to get hold of an aphid specialist one of these days.
