Identification of the aphid.
This is most likely a species of Uroleucon,in the tribe Macrosiphini, Family Aphididae. These aphids used to be classified under the generic name Dactynotus. There are 15 species with all-black siphunculi described on goldenrod, but there are numerous other hosts in the Compositae. Of those on goldenrod, 12 have pale caudae as shown, but ones more likely in U.S. do not. There are 206 species described worldwide, but at this moment do not have the number of those likely in Virginia (where you presumably found it)...presumably under a dozen. A local ubiquitous one meeting the description (but not counted yet on goldenrod) is U. ambrosiae. See if you can provide the name of the host plant.
