David, Great photos. I planted some cone flowers last year and also had the American and Painted Ladys frequenting these. Another way I found to distinguish the two is the American Lady has tow large cell spots on its hind wings and the little white dot on the orange cell on the upper wing inside and out. I love these butterflies. Thanks for sharing.
