Black-waved Flannel Moth - Megalopyge crispata - male

Black-waved Flannel Moth - Megalopyge crispata - Male
Treyburn area, Snowhill Road, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
June 6, 2005
Size: 18 mm
Found at a lighted window during the day. Length measured at 18 mm, head to tip of abdomen. See guide page for identification. Flash held off the camera here accentuated the waviness of this moth. I taped a piece of gray foam rubber behind the moth (other side of the window) so that the background would not be completely black. These moths are very placid and tolerate activity around them. I wonder if they are really toxic, like their caterpillars?
