I believe this is Synanthedon acerrubri . It attacks red and sugar maples. It is found throughout eastern North America.

Thank you Mr. Taft. I've read that they've been collected off of Acer negundo(Boxelder), also. Unfortunately the entire journal entry isn't included. See this PDF.
