Chrysops calvus and niger
Thanks so much for identifying this deer fly as either Chrysops calvus or niger, Zachary! This is a big help for me as I try to learn how to tell one deer fly species from another.

 
No problem!
All Chrysops with entirely black abdomen and yellow clypeus are calvus or niger. Species ID is a bit more involved, as you can see on the info page for this comparison.

Thanks for these tips to help pin down the identity of Chrysops calvus and niger, Zachary. Yes, I did check out the info page right after I noticed that you'd made the ID on this fly and found out that telling calvus from niger is no easy task, at least not for me.
