Myrmica, Unknown Species - Myrmica - male

Myrmica, Unknown Species - Myrmica - Male
Indianola, Warren County, Iowa, USA
October 12, 2020
When I caught this male, there were also several females in the pitfall trap. They were caught in a tallgrass prairie reserve. I think they are in the genus Myrmica, but I'm pretty interested in knowing what species. I was a little concenred they may be Myrmica rubra.

You may take some comfort knowing that this is not M. rubra. Rather, it is M. americana or another native. Note relatively coarse rugosity on the head, and the the small bump on the scape at the bend near the base, which a male of M. rubra would not not have. The Nearctic spp. of this genus really need taxonomic work.
