I think sugar bait just refer
I think sugar bait just refers to regular moth bait. There are recipes online, but baits are usually just a mix of fruit, sugar, and something alcoholic, used to attract fruit feeding moths.

Have you tried this? Is it used in conjunction with a light?
I assume you just wait at the site and wait for someone to show up? I am interested in attracting katydids (without any harm to them).

I've tried this before, but it doesn't work too well for me, probably because I live in a suburban-ish area without many fruit-feeding moths. Lights are not usually used. A red spotted purple did visit during the day though. As for the katydids, I haven't tried it with them. However, I did end up with a female angle wing nymph again this year, she ended up wandering away from the trees and ended up on some potted plants on our porch, where she currently lives.
