This looks like it might be a root-maggot fly but I couldn't find any close matches in my collection of root-maggot fly photos. I hope the photos can help determine its identity.

Eutrichota incompleta

Thanks so much for all your help to identify this root-maggot fly as Eutrichota incompleta, John! I'm glad to see these photos are now displayed on BugGuide to give viewers an idea of what Eutrichota incompleta looks like. I had no clue this species even existed before now!
