Thanks for digging that ID up Steve. Too bad I didn't get better photos (which seem to look even worse on BugGuide.net for some reason).

 
the photos look good enough
for a genus ID and, with a fly family that BugGuide says is "rare, poorly known", that's nothing to sneeze at. Besides, isn't there an inverse correlation between how interesting an insect is and how good the photo is? :-)

Agreed on all counts Steve. :-) I'm not aware of any confusion species, so I will likely move it to the genus myself if one of the editors isn't comfortable doing so.
