Euxoa servitus is very similar and largely overlaps the range of auripennis. However, the forewing of auripennis has even rather than streaked inner margin of the dark terminal area and has a toothed rather than wavy outer margin of the PM line. Also, E. servitus is known from more mesic habitats. (1)
Euxoa redimicula is also very similar and overlaps the range of auripennis in the northern Great Plains. However, the forewing of auripennis has the median area heavily dusted with black as opposed to the light gray or brown median area of redimicula. Also, auripennis has smooth rather than streaked inner margin of the dark terminal area and has a toothed rather than wavy outer margin of the PM line. (1)
