Good Call
Good call, thanks Kurt. I think good enough to move. I had one of these in 2009 but it was a female and looked quite different, but still helped me to confirm your identification. One of my references does a poor job of representing this species. I have a call into a BG expert if he wants to change.

Moved from ID Request.

Thrilled to be able to help...
I'm no expert, but I really like tracking down ID's of butterflies I've never seen.

This ID attempt was a real hoot. I pulled my National Audubon Society Field Guide to Butterflies off the shelf in hopes I could find something similar. The checkerspot section didn't look close, so I tried "Fritillaries and Orange Patterned Butterflies." When I saw Plate 602, "Desert Checkerspot," I was pretty sure that was the one.

I then turned to the text, and got the scientific name Charidryas neumoegeni which I fed to Google. That didn't get many hits, and "desert checkerspot" seemed conspicuously absent. But I noticed "Sagebrush checkerspot" in the first few hits, and tried that. A few images appeared that looked about right, so I fed

sagebrush checkerspot bugguide

to Google, and got the Bugguide page I linked to. I looked at the images, and was satisfied. The images amply confirm the "highly variable" comment on the info page.

Looks similar to...
Chlosyne acastus - Sagebrush Checkerspot

but I'm no expert.
