Harris Tract, Winneshiek County, Iowa, USA

Size: ~5 mm
This black midge has a distinct white band around its abdomen, but I couldn't find a midge that matched up with it in my limited search on BugGuide's pages.

Cricotopus
Thanks so much for identifying this midge to the genus Cricotopus, John! I looked through all the midge photos from Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin when searching for a possible match, but couldn't find one. Now I know why since there were no examples from those states of the C. tremulus group to compare.
