Eupeodes or Syrphus or ?? - Syrphus opinator

Eupeodes or Syrphus or ?? - Syrphus opinator
Aromas, San Benito County, California, USA
April 29, 2008
Size: ~10mm
Seen on Cistus in our garden. (live oak/chaparral habitat). I'm never sure how to distinguish between Eupeodes & Syrphus.

Moved
Moved from Syrphini.

Moved
Moved from Syrphid Flies.

Moved from Flies.

From general appearance
I'd go for Syrphus, but unfortunately almost impossible to be sure from a picture!
Greetings

Syrphus?
Paul Beuk went into some lengths describing both Syrphus and Eupeodes here. He stated that "In European species of Eupeodes it is always clear that bands are narrower in the middle and thus consist of two confluent markings. I do not know if this is also the case in Nearctic species." Looking at this image, the bands are narrower in the middle. To this point, is Paul's description relevant to Nearctic species?

Syrphus, Eupeodes
Tony added these comments to the differences between the two genera. They continue to frustrate me.
