You can pick them up by the "
You can pick them up by the "tail" (actually a breathing tube) and you will be fine. I do it all the time. They are not aggressive but if provoked, they will bite.

Water Scorpion
This lovely fellow is a water scorpion. Ranatra sp. They do have an unpleasant bite.
