Five cecidomyiid cocoons are visible here inside an overwintered dead stem of fleabane, Erigeron sp. It seems that a larva extrudes silk maybe three-quarters of the way around its body (270 degrees), with the remaining ninety degrees of the cocoon made up of the hard outer wall of the stem itself. Because the silken portion of the cocoon does not completely enclose the larva, in the process of breaking and cutting open the stem to get these photos, I inadvertently opened several cocoons, resulting in the opportunity to take the photos in the following series:
