tiny fly - enormous eyes - Ischnomyia albicosta

tiny fly - enormous eyes - Ischnomyia albicosta
Cross Plains, Dane County, Wisconsin, USA
July 1, 2008
Size: ~5mm

Moved
Moved from Ischnomyia. Identified by Kevin Barber. Here are his comments:

"This image shows 2 things that I interpret to be representative of I.albicosta.

1. the frons looks pretty much parallel-sided (narrowing anteriorly in I.spinosa) and the orbits also appear to be of a contrasting white colour right to the vertex (white only to about 1/2-2/3 of the way in I.spinosa).

2. the anepisternum looks like it is mostly pale with a narrow dark band running along the dorsal margin (entirely shiny black in I.spinosa - katepisternum is pale in both species).

The head of I.albicosta is more elongate than the more orbicular head of I.spinosa and I get the impression from this image that this is the case here but it is only an impression."

Moved
Moved from Flies.

Anthomyzidae
Looks like Ischnomyia to me but stay tuned for Kevin Barber's confirmation.
