Hymenopteran (sawfly?) on Ribes setosum - Euura

Sevenmile Creek, 8 kilometers northwest of Helena, Lewis and Clark County, Montana, USA

Insect with 2 pairs of wings, ca 1 cm long, not much constriction between thorax and abdomen, with transverse yellow bands on the underside of the abdomen. On upper, living stem of Ribes setosum, bending abdomen downwards (ovipositing?). Found on a Ribes setosum bush, flowering and with leaves now ca 3 cm across, one of the few riparian shrubs in this area not top-killed in last September's fire. Gentle SW-sloping streambank, ca 3 m from stream edge, with some live top growth remaining of Rosa woodsii, Prunus virginiana, Salix sp., and Alnus incana. Understory with Lepidium chalepense and Descurainia (sophia?). Mid-afternoon, sunny, light breeze, 69 F.

Elevation ca 4000 feet. Disturbed, shrubby riparian corridor on stream restoration site within a patchwork of native and non-native grassland.

Nematinae

This is something formerly in the genus Nematus, now Euura. The only species of ours recorded on Ribes is Euura ribesii (=Nematus ribesii), but that species typically has a mostly pale abdomen and more extensively pale hind legs. As BugGuide is still following the earlier classification, this can be considered Nematus sp.
