yellow moth - Eacles imperialis

yellow moth - Eacles imperialis
Tuscaloosa, Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, USA
May 20, 2006
Size: 4 inch wing span
I took a picture of this guy at night after I thought it was a huge bat trying to get into my house through the window. I was new to Alabama and it scared me to death, I got up the courage to outside and take a picture and it was a some type of giant moth, sorry about the picture being so small, I lost alot of my pictures due to a bad computer and it is the biggest I have

Eacles imperialis
my very favorite moth, as it's the one who got me into taking pictures of moths and butterflies.

....
Did some reading up on these guys and apparently this one is a male due to the Large patches of purple, Females are bigger and mostly yellow

Pine Imperial Moth (subspecies E. i. pini) occurs from southern Quebec and northern Vermont to northern Michigan and western Ontario; the adult is smaller than nominate subspecies, with more pink spots on forewing, plus strong PM line on underside of hindwing, and the larva feeds only on pine - especially White Pine (Pinus strobus)
Texas Imperial Moth (subspecies E. i. nobilis) occurs in southeastern Texas; one-third of the adult population is completely shaded with pinkish-brown
