Keys out to Dermacentor variabilis using the Yunkers et al. key (1). That paper indicates that D. variabilis is the only species of this genus that's found in Maryland but I don't know if that's still considered true.
Specimen photographed immersed in glycerol and under a coverslip. I have equivalent images of the dry specimen if they're also useful.
