Aspen defoliating caterpillar - Leucoma salicis

Aspen defoliating caterpillar - Leucoma salicis
Husum, WA County, Washington, USA
May 30, 2021
Size: 22mm
Millions of these caterpillars were found in a aspen grove defoliating the trees. Some trees were completely bare of leaves. I'm wondering if this is due to the drought even though the nearby wetland has a normal water table level?
