Glowworm beetle - Phengodes - male

Glowworm beetle - Phengodes - Male
Bartlesville, Washington County, Oklahoma, USA
July 3, 2008
Size: ~ 1 inch
This guy came to my blacklight, and I honestly don't have a clue as to its identity. I poked around Bugguide and my field guides and got nowhere. Sorry I don't have a better image.

Moved
Moved from Glowworm Beetles.

It's a male too!
You would not recognize the female unless you were familiar with the family. Females are larviform and glow in the dark.

cool
You'd think I'd know better. My zoo has a bioluminescence display and the "railroad worm" is presented in model form along with glowing fungi, fireflies, and a few other glowing lifeforms.

We don't show these beetles in adult form so that's why I didn't know what it was. (that's my story anyway!)

Phengodidae
Check them out. The antennae and short elytra are characteristic of most.

Interesting
I totally didn't see this as a beetle, so I skipped Coleoptera in my search. This is a new one on me and I'll definitely remember it in the future. Thanks, Rick!
