Progressive Bee fly ? - Exoprosopa caliptera

Progressive Bee fly ? - Exoprosopa caliptera
Silver lake, Amador County, California, USA
July 5, 2008
Size: 1/2"
I found this colorful fellow at about the 7400 foot elevation lounging on a damp forest trail where there were many frolicking blue Butterflys licking at the fresh minerals . I was amazed how pretty this fairly big fly is . It did not seem interested in bugging people , it seemed content by the feeding Butterflys . Thanks for any help in confirming his i.d.

Great photo, Beth -

I don't know the name "Progressive Bee Fly." This is Exoprosopa caliptera, a high country beauty with a patchy distribution over much of the West. I know of just one other shot of this fly on Bugguide, but it has not been sorted yet. Nice addition.
