Stag Beetle - Sinodendron rugosum - male

Stag Beetle - Sinodendron rugosum - Male
5 mi. south of Port Angeles, Clallam County, Washington, USA
July 5, 2008
Size: 1.6 cm
This Stag beetle showed up on our deck. I've never seen one here before.
It was quite sluggish until warmed considerably, so I moved it to a wood pile and was able to take a number of photos.

Profile
Thank you.
It was late on a gray day when I found this beetle, so I kept it overnight and took it out the next day in midmorning. My wife held a sheet of frosted plastic to diffuse the sun, softening shadows.
Beetles of this size are difficult to photograph with my setup, a Nikon Coolpix S10, because there's no direct aperture control, and the beetles are so darned three dimensional.
