Black ant with pinched thorax - Formica subsericea

Black ant with pinched thorax - Formica subsericea
Halfway, Washington County, Maryland, USA
May 28, 2021
Size: 8 mm
The ants live in a sandy colony by the walkway. They're a little smaller than most eastern carpenter ants but larger than pavement ants. They constantly carry plant and animal matter in and out of their holes. This one is carrying a larger insect (red ant?) into a hole.
