Stem borer, thimbleweed

Stem borer, thimbleweed
Van Peenan Park, Decorah, Winneshiek County, Iowa, USA
After I took the photos of the larva on June 4, I reintroduced it to an ~3-inch piece of the same stem in which I had found it (the stem pictured in the current series). I wrapped the end of the stem piece containing the larva in moistened toilet paper and placed stem piece with wrapping in a small vial. Conditions in the vial were very humid as indicated by the amount of condensation. On 17 June I checked the vial and found this puparium in the toilet paper wrapping. I had not really expected the larva to survive, so I was pleasantly surprised to find it had reached the pupa stage.
