Catocala neogama? - Catocala neogama

Catocala neogama? - Catocala neogama
Lyons Woods Forest Preserve, Lake County, Illinois, USA
June 10, 2021
Size: 40 mm long
I’m more certain that the host plant is black walnut as someone in the comments suggested because the plant has two leaves on the end of a branch rather than one. When disturbed, the caterpillar aggressively snaps backward and releases brown liquid. It was previously ~25 mm long but has since shed and grown to 40 mm long.
