Big scarab beetle - Osmoderma eremicola

Big scarab beetle - Osmoderma eremicola
Toronto, Ontario, Canada
July 6, 2008
Size: 20mm approx
Found this on a city sidewalk under a big silver maple. Wondered if it was injured as it apparently was having a hard time folding up its wings. After browsing the guide I think Osmoderma might be the best match. I think this one has an extra crease across the elytra, perhaps backing up my injury theory.

I agree with Stephen.
The crease is due to a deformity in development, not an injury.

Wow!!
We get these in the city of Toronto???
The crease in the elytra does appear to be a deformity.

Yes! Someone I know has found hermit beetles in High Park.
Ref: Whitehead, P.F. - High Park, Toronto, Canada, Part 3. Hermit beetles. The genus Osmoderma Gory & Percheron (Col., Scarabaeidae).

And I have found in Victoria Park, on the other side of the city, a larva that could possibly be this species. See

Indeed, in my experience, in Toronto there are plenty of excellent opportunities for visitors; by the way, we are both UK residents!
