Red Wasp? - Pheidole

Red Wasp? - Pheidole
Plano, Collin County, Texas, USA
July 8, 2008
Size: 1 1/4 inch
I do not know what this is?

Plano seems like a stretch for this species. I could believe it though, since a lot of the habitat near Dallas seems like an extension of Hill Country (where there are still pockets of geminata), with a lot of shared ant species. However, this just doesn't look like a Solenopsis to me but a Pheidole queen.

Moved from Solenopsis geminata.

Myrmicinae: Solenopsis
I'm with MrILTA on the measurements. This is Solenopsis geminata, the tropical fire ant, considered native in southern Texas. Winged females measure 9-11 mm in body length.

I question your measurement of the ant. 1 and 1/4th inch seems huge but fits a Camponouts. This doesn't look like a Camponotus though. I want to say you meant something closer to 1cm or half an inch and it's a Pheidole or Solenopsis. Could be a few others but I need a better view.

a winged ant
sorry i couldn't be more specific

It is soo large and the red strips around the abdomen

these are not pigmented bands,
rather thicker parts of abdominal skeleton; thinner segment margins are exposed as lighter bands 'cuz she's carrying a hefty load of eggs that make her belly stretch
