nice one; doesn't look one bit like clivina [to me],
but strongly reminds a rather heavy-built Agonum s.l.

It would seem that this is a very close match. There are so many carabidae that I get lost and overwhelmed almost immediately. How did you know where to look? What characteristics?

 
It takes determination followed by experience
to instantly recognize carabids by genus, but more scrutiny is usually required for species identification. The 'gestalt' thought process is analagous to instantly recognizing a breed of dog. However, the usual 'textbook' reply is that you become familiar with published standard keys to tribes first, then keys to genera within tribes.
