Black-shouldered Spinyleg - Dromogomphus spinosus - male

Black-shouldered Spinyleg - Dromogomphus spinosus - Male
Tallassee, Blount County, Tennessee, USA
July 4, 2008
I was not able to get close enough for any better photos of this dragonfly. It was perched on rocks along a pond which was part of an inlet into the Tellico River. It often perched with its abdomen raised about 45 degrees.
There were definitely yellow marks on all abdominal segments.

I first thought this was a Handsome Clubtail. Now that it has been identified, I feel that I should have figured it out more easily! I'll keep studying.

This is a Dromogomphus spinosus. Note the very long hind legs, unique frontal thoracic pattern, and the abdominal pattern.
