Arrhopalitidae.3
LaSalle County, Illinois, USA

Super excited to use a real microscope! So much to learn! I need a new fluid other than alcohol, and a method of flipping the springtails into different positions… any tips? ;)

Arrhopalitidae
Indeed.
Now all you have to do is learn to use it properly ;-)
We could now use the keys of the pro's to ID your specimen.
You will need to provide the diagnostic shots.
There are 25 nearctic species of Arrhopalites.
First step in the key :
we need to see the setae on the 'ventral' side of the dens.
Take the ventral side of the dens when the furca is flipped backwards. You should see 3 apical setae as reference (if you see these you know that you are looking at the right side). But we need to count the proximal setae : 3 or 2 ?

Denaturated ethanol about 70 degrees will do fine. Adding a drop of glycerine may help to prevent dehydrating the specimen when the ethanol evaporates during handling of the specimen.

Flipping over a specimen you do with a fine paintbrush. The finest you can get. Use 2 of them. One for lifting the specimen. The other to wipe it off from the first. You will need some practise ;-)

Have fun!

Thanks for everything Frans!
Maybe I will let these guys recuperate their populations a bit before I sacrifice anymore ;) Makes time to get the things I need!
